AASD School Wellness Policy Update
Posted on 08/28/2018
AASD families, starting this year, we’ll be recognizing birthdays and other celebrations during the school day in new, fun, and meaningful ways! A change is that students won’t be bringing in snacks from home to share.

Why did we make this change?
HEALTH: Recognize students in more inclusive ways that support overall student wellness.

EQUITY: Reduce social and economic pressures on families to provide celebration snacks and increased cultural awareness for families.

SAFETY: Avoid unintended consequences related to food allergies and decreased complications for students with medical issues.

The Appleton Area School District continues to update practices that provide our students with a safe, welcoming, and healthy environment. As part of these efforts, the AASD School Wellness Policy Committee recently updated School Wellness Policy 458 in order to align our school wellness procedures with best practices.

Knowing this is a change from past practices, we understand that part of the process is learning together the many ways we can still honor and recognize our students without the incorporation of food items.

If you have specific questions, we encourage you to take a look at our frequently asked questions.

Together, we will continue to ensure that we are implementing best practices that focus on increased student wellness for every child, every day in the Appleton Area School District.

If you have any questions about this policy, please reach out to Principal Knaack.
